Clevedon Pier Visitor Centre

Winner of ‘People’s Favourite’ at the Historic England Angel Awards. Shortlisted for RICS Tourism & Leisure Award 2017. Shortlisted for RIBA South West Award 2018.

A new visitor centre, including catering facilities, dining area, WCs, meeting room, viewing deck and associated storage over three levels built into the existing pier ramp. Emerging from the ramp is the frameless glass structure containing the cafe and viewing deck overlooking the Severn Estuary. The original Victorian Toll House at the pier entrance was also re-fitted to include retail and exhibition spaces.

The pier first opened its doors in 1869 and is the only operating Grade I listed seaside pier in the UK. In order to thrive in the 21st Century it needed to be able to offer an enhanced visitor experience that would contribute to the long term future of the pier.

O’LearyGoss were involved in the project from its initial inception including close involvement in the preparation of funding bids.

English Heritage fully supported the scheme, commenting that “the proposal to excavate the ramp is ingenious” and “the design of the proposed new structure, a lightweight element that emerges gently from the camber of the ramp appears well considered and we would fully support the contemporary design of this.”
