Earth Sciences Building for University of Bristol

A post-graduate research facility, housing state of the art microprobes, demonstration and staff facilities. The building is located behind the Grade II* listed Wills Memorial Building in the centre of Bristol.

Our design created a new two storey building on the northern side of the inner courtyard, flanked by the neo-gothic buttresses of the Great Hall on one side and facing the rear of the Wills Memorial Building.

An existing stairwell and toilet block were enlarged to include a lift and plant room above, incorporated into the design as the “blue” element of the building.

The microprobe laboratories, with stringent engineering and environmental requirements, are located to the rear against the large retaining wall. Offices, write up spaces, and less environmentally-critical laboratories have a southerly aspect over the inner courtyard.
