The Story
Having completed two projects for the school in 2001 - 2005, in 2016 we were invited to design a new building to house ‘design technology’ and other classrooms.
Choosing an appropriate site on the school grounds was critical. It was important that the completed building would work with timetabling the curriculum, but also that its construction would create minimal disturbance. The relationship of the new wing to the rest of the school campus was also critical.
Funding was only available for the first phase of work - specialist design technology classes - but the school also wanted to provide for the opportunity of adding additional classrooms and a library, in the future. Working with the school we developed a ‘brief’ and a design which could be built ‘in two halves’ - linked by a future atrium space.
Early sketches were developed into a BIM model, from which which accurate 3D visualisations were generated to explain the design to the client. This also formed the basis of the planning application.
Planning permission was granted within the 13 week statutory period.
We prepared a full tender package for a ‘develop and construct’ procurement route. The tender was won by Beard, and we then worked with them to take the project through to completion.
Work started on site in early 2017 and was completed and handed over a year later.
The design principles were developed from the site-specific brief. The building was designed to high environmental standards, both in terms of energy use, materials and on-site energy generation.
Large windows, glazed curtain walls and skylights create a light, airy interior, minimising the need for artificial light and providing a comfortable learning environment.
