The Story
Redmaid’s School purchased a site with a number of existing football pitches on the border of Bristol and South Gloucestershire in 2018. O’LearyGoss were commissioned to design a new Sports Pavilion with new hockey pitches for them. The site was within the green belt, and included existing community use which the school intended to retain.
Working with Sports Agility, the specialist pitch designer, we held many in-person sessions with Redmaids’ key stakeholders to develop the Brief. High level sketch proposals were developed from this Brief, and presented to the client’s board of trustees. We undertook extensive community consultation and a pre-application submission was made, managed by JLL. The pre-application and community response was positive, and so the project was further developed and refined.
The pavilion building was conceived as a long, low roof supported on an expressed timber structure, set between the two new hockey pitches. This would provide shelter for those participating in, and watching, sporting events. The long low aesthetic was a deliberate decision to reduce the visual impact on the Green Belt . A full planning application was submitted in the summer of 2019, and granted shortly before Christmas.
Anticipating a positive planning permission, Redmaids commissioned us to prepare a full package of inforamtion for competitive tender in the summer of 2019. Sustainability was a key factor in the original brief and so the design included low carbon heat and hot water sources, low carbon materials and a high level of insulation.
The project was tendered in early 2020, but ‘Covid’ intervened, and the Pavilion element of the project did not proceed. One hockey pitch and three netball courts are now completed.
