Transformation of three linked general and surgical wards at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
The brief was to provide ‘privacy and dignity’ to a ward of male and female bed bays. The refurbishment enabled the wards to operate with ‘single sex’ areas; provide new isolation bays and high care bays. Staff and relatives’ areas were also refurbished.
The colours and finishes were specifically chosen to create a calm and reassuring atmosphere throughout, and a high level of design co-ordination ensured that all services were fully concealed but accessible for maintenance.
