Lifeline: bio-sciences research facility
A new medical research centre for the University of Bristol at Southmead Hospital. The Leukaemia Lifeline Centre was funded by the charity Children with Leukaemia as a centre of excellence for research into stem cells and the treatment of childhood leukaemia. In addition to the postgraduate research laboratories, the building also provides teaching and seminar accommodation.
Glass block encased stair towers separate the three main areas of the building; the fully glazed entrance area, the Cell Culture laboratories, and the PCR laboratories. Suspended fixed solar shading louvres enliven the south facing facades and help to control the internal working environment.
Unfortunately the building was demolished in 2010 to pave the way for the new Southmead Hospital which opened in 2014.
