Stem Cells Laboratories

In two phases: Jan 2001 - Oct. 2001. Sept 2003- Mar. 2004.

The National Blood Service needed to provide additional offices and specialized stores on their Birmingham site. We proposed the demolition of the ground floor of the existing garage to the rear of the main building, keeping of the basement area, and constructing a new building on top of the existing slab and structure. The design allowed for a single storey building to be completed, with with provision for an additional office floor to be added later.

The form of construction had to be as lightweight as possible so that it could be "justified" on the existing foundations - achieved using a lightweight steel framing system with specialist cladding.

Shortly after completion of the building we were asked to convert the stores area to a Class B and Class C Stem Cells laboratory suite and nitrogen vat room. The flexibility of the original framing solution allowed this complete change of building use with relative ease. The allowance for the additional office floor has not been compromised in any way, as the plant and nitrogen tank is accommodated outside the main building volume.
