Lifeline Centre, Bristol

Completed: 2001

A new medical research centre for the University of Bristol at Southmead Hospital. The Leukaemia Lifeline Centre is funded by the charity Children with Leukaemia as a centre of excellence in research into stem cells and the treatment of childhood leukaemia. In addition to the postgraduate research laboratories, the building also provides teaching and seminar accommodation.

Glass block encased stair towers separate the three main areas of the building; fully glazed entrance area, the Cell Culture Lab. suite, and the PCR Labs. The form of construction is a direct response to the need to build quickly and on a constrained site within a busy hospital. Lightweight cladding to the main facades is combined with a profiled metal roof on a steel framed composite structure. Suspended fixed solar shading louvres enliven the south facing facades and help to control the internal working environment.
