Sheltered accommodation for people with learning difficulties on behalf of Phoenix NHS Trust.
Completed 1996
The building consists of three "houses", each for five residents with two carers, set in landscaped gardens. One house is designed specifically for physically disabled people. The individual "houses" are linked by communal and staff facilities. The overall design and planning enables a degree of autonomy in a relaxed and homely atmosphere.
Clay brick and stained timber cladding articulate the exterior of the building, giving warmth and vigour. The development reads as a collection of smaller buildings, creating a domestic, rather than institutional scale. Internal planning gives each of the three living rooms, and the communal facilities, a southerly aspect onto the private gardens. The bedrooms are designed to face the morning sun. Excellent thermal performance is ensured by the insulated timber frame construction.
This project, on a suburban site beside a parish hall and school in Kingswood, Bristol, commenced on site in Summer 1995, and was completed in February 1996.
