Seeley's Hotel Redevelopment, Clifton, Bristol
2006 - 2009
The conversion of 7 no. mid-19th century Grade II listed terraced houses to 14 flats and duplexes. The buildings had long been in use as a hotel. Many of the alterations made over time have been removed as part of this conversion to restore the Victorian character of the original buildings.
The original building fabric was retained as part of the conversion to apartments. In developing both the proposals and the detailed specifications, we liaised with the local authority conservation officer from an early stage. The original sliding sash windows were restored, with new windows, where required, made to match. Internal features, including staircases, were retained, with new decorative plasterwork and joinery skillfully integrated with the original.
The lower ground floor apartments each have a new bay window opening onto the rear south facing gardens To the front, new sett paved forecourts with off street parking have been provided over the original vaulted cellars. The forecourts to the individual houses are delineated by new railings which reflect those that would have originally been part of the streetscape in Clifton.
The external colour scheme uses historic pastel shades which enhance the individuality of the houses.
The conservation and rejuvenation of this listed terrace received a Bristol Civic Society Environmental Award in 2010.
