Robinson Building

2006 - 2010

The Robinson Building is a former paper bag factory and printing works which visually dominates the Bedminster West Conservation Area.

The redevelopment of this 1870s building provides 100 flats over the five of the existing floors of the building and within a new a two storey roof addition. Natural light is brought into the heart of the building by a dramatic circular atrium glazed with ETFE cushions. The existing cast and wrought iron structure of the original building is retained with new elements designed in a contrasting contemporary style. The existing massive brick external walls have been retained, exposed within apartments as a design feature, with new double glazed steel framed windows echoing the fenestration of the original building.

The building is heated by a mini-district heating system serving all 100 apartments, with centralised ventilation incorporating heat recovery. The green credentials of the building are enhanced by full recycling facilities, intelligent lighting controls and the maximisation of daylighting in the atrium, and stack effect cooling of this central space at the heart of the building.

Construction was completed in 2010. The development was awarded a CABE Building for Life Silver Standard and Premier Guarantee Excellence Award 2010: Conversion project of the year - Regional winner. A Bristol Civic Society Environmental Award followed in 2011.
