Restoration of, and additions to, the former Royal Pier Hotel, Clevedon

2010 -

The Grade II listed Royal Pier Hotel was built to coincide with the opening of Clevedon Pier in 1869. The building, with some alterations to the seaward side, remained in use as a hotel until 2000, when it closed.

Our proposals retain and restore the original 1869 building fabric, with new additions to the seaward side, and a new building on the vacant part of the site. The Victorian architectural language of the original building is continued into the new wing which forms the backdrop to Clevedon Pier. The remainder of the new additions are contemporary in form and detailing, using the materials found on the original building, with the addition of a vertical copper clad feature which adopts the colour of the pier itself.

The redeveloped building provides 17 apartments across a range of sizes, with four duplex penthouses. All apartments have a terrace or a balcony, and all living rooms have a direct view of the sea and the end of Clevedon Pier. Car parking is provided off Marine Parade or on one of two lower car parking decks behind a gabion wall facing the Bristol Channel.

We entered into discussions with local amenity groups and interested parties at an early stage in the design process. Presentations were made and opinions sought prior to the finalisation of the designs. Our proposals received considerable local support, with positive responses also from both the conservation officer and English Heritage. The planning and listed building consent applications were approved by in March 2011.

These proposals have been drawn up in conjunction with our proposals for a new Visitor Facilities building on Clevedon Pier.
