Mental Health Centre

Forest Resource Centre, Coleford, Forest of Dean, for Severn NHS Trust.

Cost: £0.35 million. In three phases from July 1999 to May 2002.

The new link building provides a team base for the Community Mental Health Team serving the Forest of Dean. This new building connected the existing Resource Centre to the Day Hospital allowing the centre to operate as one unit.

The new building uses a structural glulam frame and timber deck expressed internally and externally, together with a steeply pitched slate roof to match those of the nearby buildings. High level clerestorey windows under wide overhanging roofs bring glare free light into the office space. The timber framed structure, and timber framed windows contrast with the simple roughcast rendered finishes of the walls. The link building also created two new external courtyards and a garden room for the use of Day Hospital patients.

A fire in the adjoining Resource Centre during the construction of the link building created an opportunity to rebuild this building in keeping with the interior design of the new link.

The final phase of the redevelopment was the conversion of the roof space in the re-built Resource Centre to create additional staff accommodation.
