Dorothy House Hospice, Bradford-On-Avon

2003 - 2006

This project extends an existing hospice complex in north west Wiltshire with new Day Care and Education Wings. The Day Care wing is an energy efficient timber framed pavilion, set at right angles to the stone Edwardian building, and creating a space in front of the original building, and providing views across the rolling countryside.

The project was granted planning permission despite being located in the Green Belt, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Conservation Area. The Planning Officer noted a refreshing change from poor copies of period architectural styles and approval was confirmed by the Secretary of State.

Sarah Whitfield, Chief Executive at Dorothy House said...

"We are very excited by this innovative design to improve and enhance patient facilities at the hospice. We are also grateful to our architects for being so patient with us during the design process and enabling our patients to have a real say in the final design"

O'LearyGoss were both Architects and Project Managers for the project. The building procurement was by a partnering two stage tender process, with construction in phases to allow the work of the hospice to continue during construction. The building was formally opened by Princess Anne in November 2006. The project won a BBC/RIBA award for Best Public Building, selected by public vote from a short-list of buildings in the South West.
