Bristol Eye Hospital

2009 - 2011

This project involved the development of the Paedriatic Department and the expansion of the Retinal and Clinical Research facilities on two floors of the existing Eye Hospital building in central Bristol. The work was undertaken in three main phases, with the Eye Hospital remaining fully operational throughout the works.

Patients and staff were consulted throughout the design process, with staff contributing to the interior design.

The Paedriatic Department required the provision of outpatient consulting and treatment rooms, with waiting areas for children and their accompanying adults. The children's play area is separated from the main circulation and adult waiting areas by a glass block wall, itself illuminated by LED lighting which changes colour over time. Lighting in the waiting areas can be controlled to give subdued levels generally, with enhanced feature lighting on artworks which formed an integral part of the design.

The colour and artistic theme extends to the Retinal and Clinical Research facilities on the floor above.

The project was completed in 2011, following the demise of the original contractor and the re-tendering of the part completed works.
