New Science Wing and Pastoral Centre at St. Joseph's School, Laverstock, nr. Salisbury
A new wing to provide two science laboratories and a classroom for a voluntary aided secondary school. The existing labs in the school were refurbished and converted to class and staff rooms as part of the project.
The building form is defined by monopitched roofs with clerestorey windows to the north side immediately under the monopitched ridge. These high level windows encourage cross ventilation in the science laboratories and the one classroom in the new wing. Outdoor teaching spaces open to the south off each of the science labs.
External materials are brightly coloured insulated render in ochre and terracotta, with blue timber windows and a grey raised seam metal roof. Exposed steelwork is painted charcoal grey.
The new wing uses underfloor heating throughout. This system provides a comfortable internal environment, with fluctuations in temperature modulated by the thermal mass of the thick masonry walls, which are insulated externally.
A further phase, to provide a new Pastoral Centre for the School was commissioned by the school in 2004, and was completed at Easter 2005.
