South Bristol Sports Centre

2006 - 2007

The existing sports club facilities comprised of an inter-war Tudorbethan club house, with a number of facilities built on from the early 1970s onwards. The facilities were in a poor condition, underused, and did not meet modern sports requirements or customer expectations. A major refurbishment project to improve facilities was undertaken in three phases, to enable continuity of use of the centre throughout the contract period.

The original snooker hall was converted to provide seven modern changing rooms. Three of the original squash courts were converted to a gymnasium, an exercise studio, physio treatment rooms, steam room and sauna. The two remaining squash courts were retained and upgraded. Club facilities were completely redesigned to provide a flexible multi function space with a full commercial kitchen to the first floor. A new entrance was created, and at ground level there is a new sports centre reception, new bars and administration areas. Full disabled access is now provided. The existing playing fields were also re-laid and re-landscaped, with the construction of a new floodlit all-weather pitch. The sports centre is now well used and popular, providing facilities for local schools, holiday clubs and the local community.

The project was awarded a Bristol Civic Society Environmental Award.
