King Edward Building at the Bristol Royal Infirmary

The refurbishment of the King Edward Building in 2015 provided new facilities for a number of relocated departments. Clinical areas included Rheumatology and “Sleep”. A new Mortuary, Chaplaincy area and Hotel Services facilities were also provided, together with a centrally located multi-faith Sanctuary space.

The project required knowledge of NHS procedures and technical guidelines in addition to the ability to develop a complex brief within a budget.

The Mortuary brief included the requirement for specialist refrigeration systems, as well as sensitively designed rooms for bereaved families and visitors.

The Chaplaincy also had a complex brief due to a high number of stakeholders. This was particularly influential on the development of the Sanctuary space, which was required to accommodate visitors from a number of religions. The Sanctuary was subsequently nominated for a Better Buildings Healthcare Award.
